After the resurrection, the Twelve Apostles preached a Risen Christ. Their message was about Repentance, and the acceptance of Jesus as the Messiah. Added to this, they made known the power of the Holy Spirit, available to all who believe, whereby one may have power to walk a life well pleasing to God. [Read more…]
39. It Would Have Been Better…
Rosalind writes –
We embraced the doctrine of Ultimate Salvation for every man in 1969. Since that time we have encountered a number of different understandings in relation to this wonderful revelation. Increasingly we are becoming alarmed at the knock-on effect of this belief. In many quarters it arises from a lack of antithesis, a lack of true understanding of sin and its consequences, a complacency and a ‘God is in control’ mentality that fails to properly recognise what happened in the Garden of Eden. Only today we have read from one American web site the following:- [Read more…]
40a. Friday’s Man was nailed upon a Cross
Today is another anniversary, one that is far more important than my own, as related in a previous Wellspring. For today is the traditional anniversary of our Lord’s death in AD 33, some 1971 years ago. That Friday afternoon, just outside the city walls, near the Damascus Gate, at about 3 p.m. the human life of Jesus expired, as He commended His spirit to His Father. [Read more…]
40b. Sunday’s Man was nowhere to be found
It was about 5 a.m. on the morning of Sunday 5th April AD 33. Another earth-tremor was felt in and aroundJerusalem. The soldiers who drearily guarded the tomb where Jesus’ body had been placed were alerted to the possibility of a rock-fall, because the tomb was hollowed out from a cliff-face. But instead they were presented with a startling sight as two brilliant figures in white proceeded to roll back the massive circular stone that covered the entrance. This was too much to bear, and they fled. [Read more…]
41. Jeremiah’s Cryptogram
Here is a little something to chew over, something few know about, simply because Bibles and commentaries fail to reveal the facts.
Jeremiah uses a cryptogram four times in his writings, twice in chapter 25, and twice in chapter 51. Here are the details. [Read more…]
43. The Gospel of Humanism
An article by Andrew Strom.
What is Humanism? It is all around us. It is the dominant spiritual creed of much of Western society today. It is rampant in the media, education, medicine – everywhere. And sadly it has infiltrated the church in a huge way in recent years. In Humanistic thinking, MAN is the center of all things rather than God. Everything revolves around making MAN happy. 44. Cosmetic Christianity
One of the (few) good things about belonging to the European Community is the law relating to the sale of goods, by which manufacturers are required to display the composition of their products. For foodstuffs, the law requires that each ingredient is listed in decreasing weight order. With other products, such as toothpaste, hair shampoo, and soap, each chemical constituent must be fully displayed. As a result, everyone should be able to inspect their articles of purchase, to see whether they match up to their personal standards. So far, so good. [Read more…]
45. EXPERIENCE versus KNOWLEDGE
In the previous article, on “Cosmetic Christianity”, I suggested the idea of quitting church for a while to obtain a re-appraisal of true Christianity, through serious reading of the New Testament. This may have caused offence to some, who might feel like quoting the Welsh poet, W.H.Davies, who wrote (in 1913) [Read more…]
46. “Just a wearyin’ for you”
I knew her when I was still young in the faith, in the early 1950s, and she was then in the autumn of her life. She was quiet, relaxed, serene, of deep understanding, and rich wisdom. I felt drawn towards her as one who might impart something to me, I hardly knew what, but in my spirit I sensed I needed to dwell in her presence a while. Looking back now over the last 45 years, I have greater perspective clarity than I possessed in my “salad days”. My renewed spirit was yearning for the Person of the Lord Jesus, the One she had by her side, invisible but real, untouchable but bristling with adventure, romance and life. I know that now, and am glad to recall the memories of those summer days when I stayed in her Guest House in Southbourne, near Bournemouth. [Read more…]
