These words come from a well-known story told by the Master Story Teller. They refer to a Wedding Feast, where guests reclined according to their honour and seniority. It would be foolish for one to plonk himself down next to the President, only to be told to move down. This would invite censure from other guests, and embarrassment to one’s self. However, by taking a lowly position, and waiting for the President to invite one to “Move up higher”, there would be a sense of elation. Such was the Master’s teaching about humility, not getting grandiose ideas about one’s own standing, importance or position in respect of the coming Kingdom of God. (Luke.14:8-10) [Read more…]
72. Creation’s Vanity
In Romans 8:20 the A.V. reads “the creature was made subject to vanity.” What do these words mean?
With the help of a few modern versions, and Greek Lexicons, Paul’s underlying thought becomes much clearer, and is worth pondering. Instead of “creature” we should read “creation”. It is not so much a commentary on life forms, as on the whole of creation, certainly of this, our world, but probably the rest of astronomical space as well. [Read more…]
47. The Pattern and Purpose of the Cherubim
It has long been taught by Bible scholars that the Four Gospels are related to the Four Cherubim in the following way.
Matthew. Jesus presented as King, son of David. The “LION” of Judah.
Mark. Jesus presented as the Ideal Servant of God. The “OX”, servant of man.
Luke. Jesus presented as the Son of Man. The “MAN” representing humanity.
John. Jesus presented as the Son of God. The “EAGLE”, flying in heavenly places. [Read more…]
34. The Lesson of Amos
I have today received a communication of a most ominous nature, a prophetic message to the effect that the western coast of North America is WITHIN DAYS to receive an earthquake, the size of which will be sufficient to cause the whole coastal plain to slide into the ocean. [Read more…]
26. A Tribute to the Rock-Badger’s Family
No one knows why Azaliah named his son Shaphan, the Rock-Badger. In Proverbs 30:26 we learn that the “Conies, or Rock-Badgers, are a feeble folk, but they make their house in the rock.” Sensible little creatures. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians that God has “chosen the weak things of the world to confound the mighty.” And where do these weak ones dwell? In Christ, the Rock! “Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee,” wrote Augustus Toplady in his famous hymn. [Read more…]
25. Rosh Hashana – the feast of trumpets
At 6 p.m. this evening, wherever you are in the world, it is the beginning of the first day of the Hebrew year, the 1st of Tishri, known as Rosh Hashana, “Head of the Year”, and in Leviticus 23 it is designated “the memorial of blowing of trumpets.” Of course, this happens, and has happened, every year, and it may seem superfluous to mention it, any more than it is necessary to remind everyone on January 1st that it is the start of the Gentile year. [Read more…]
22. The coming of the Lord
Surely it is a good thing to be amongst those who “love His appearing.” (2 Tim.4:8) How many dear souls have yearned for Him in later life, saying, “How long, O Lord, is Thy chariot in coming?” But now, at the end of the year, the decade, the century, and the millennium, we seem to be living in an atmosphere electrically charged, and bristling with anticipation. What shall we say to this? The following points may be of comfort, and yet also of instruction at this season. [Read more…]
13. “Much more” & “No more”
In the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Paul was not wanting in reminding his readers of the superlatives relating to Christ’s work. Frequently he used the expression “much more”. Here are a few. They make uplifting reading. [Read more…]
114. Good and Evil
In September 1995 I wrote three papers based on an exposition of the words “Good and Evil.” (P.Ts 66 – 68) At that time the subject was brought to our notice, (by the Lord I am sure,) to alert us to an area of understanding that was entirely new, most exciting, and quite devastating as to its impact on our thinking. It came as a shaft of light, and the whole concept has been mulled over, and worked this way and that ever since. In this present paper, nearly four years later, I should like to draw some threads together and present a more rounded treatment of the subject and its consequences to the whole of Christian thought, behaviour, and future hope. I feel strongly that to make a study of these words and their implication is of such foundational value and importance that the outcome could be little short of a spiritual earthquake. So let’s see what’s in store. [Read more…]
108. El-Shaddai
There are many titles ascribed to our Lord in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. These have been variously translated by Lord and God using different type faces. It would have served English readers better if in a forward an explanation had been given, and a transliteration used instead of a translation. For example, the sacred name YHVH, known as the holytetragrammaton, and which no one knows how to pronounce because the Rabbis have kept it a secret over the ages – the A.V. Bible uniformly translates as LORD. [Read more…]
