106. For whom did Christ die?

16th December 2000 by Arthur Eedle

There can only be three possibilities for consideration, which are as follows –

1. Christ died only for the elect, whether they be thought of as “chosen” in the Calvinist sense, or “believing” in the Arminiansense.
2. Christ died potentially for all mankind, but is operative only for those who believe.
3. Christ died in fact for all mankind, and this will be worked out fully in future administrations of His plan of salvation.

Let’s see what the implications are for these three alternatives. [Read more…]

99. A Passionate Plea for Truth

18th October 2000 by Arthur Eedle

Before saying anything else let me make one thing perfectly clear. The Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, doesn’t need Arthur Eedle to canvass His character electronically across the globe, as though on some campaign trail. He is quite capable of looking after His own affairs, as He always has done, and always will do. Neither do I vainly imagine that He has set me up to act in this capacity. [Read more…]

81. The Unacceptable Face of Universalism

12th June 2000 by Arthur Eedle

In the last number I reproduced William Barclay’s testimony as to why he believed in Universalism. I referred to his courage in respect of his openness. After all, he was a Professor of Divinity in Glasgow University. Some men hold to Universalism and keep it close to their chest, knowing the price they would have to pay in advertising their beliefs. Others have preferred to live with truth as they see it, regardless of the brick-bats and abuse. [Read more…]

80. Professor William Barclay

10th June 2000 by Arthur Eedle

Courageous Advocate of Universalism

Born in 1907, the son of William Dugald Barclay of Fort William, a Gaelic-speaking highlander, William spent most of his life in Bonnie Scotland. He was educated at Dalziel High School, Motherwell, “just an ordinary school – – Scottish education at its best.” In 1925 he went to Glasgow University, and left four years later with a first-class honours degree in Classics. Then in 1929 he entered Trinity College, Glasgow to begin the final stage of his training for the ministry. In 1933 he married Kate, the daughter of the minister of the parish of Dundonald in Ayrshire. “I cannot think what life would have been like without her.” Thence he set out on his career, as a Minister of the Gospel at Renfrew, and later in life became Professor of Divinity atGlasgow University. 66. The Moral Dilemma. A Second Answer

4th March 2000 by Arthur Eedle

Jonah 3:10 – 4:1  “And God saw the works (of Nineveh), that they turned from their evil way, and God changed His mind concerning the evil that He said He would do to them, and He did it not.  But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.” [Read more…]

65. The Moral Dilemma. A Personal Answer

1st March 2000 by Arthur Eedle

I have received a sufficiently large number of requests to warrant putting my personal answer out as a following number of the Wayside Pulpit. I may do it in two parts. Certainly what I have to say in this article will not be along the expected lines. It is abundantly clear that my wife and I believe strongly in God’s Total Victory. We have advertised that fact on numerous occasions, together with many and varied reasons, stemming from a flash revelation back in April 1969, when the Lord showed me His plan for mankind in a most dramatic way, even though it was not on my mind at the time. 64. The Moral Dilemma

27th February 2000 by Arthur Eedle

The New Testament contains a number of apparently contradictory statements. Reason and logic demand that one cannot believe both to be true. Let me explain, giving examples of both sides. [Read more…]

51. “The Saviour of Mankind”

17th December 1999 by Arthur Eedle

“Christians awake, salute the happy morn,
Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born.”

At this time of the year the world goes mad on a spending spree of prodigious proportions, and shop-keepers do all they can to encourage it; after all, it lines their pockets! The amazing thing is that the celebration is (supposed to be) based upon a Child born in a manger in Bethlehem. But for the majority it is celebrated more in keeping with the age-old Saturnalia festivities of ancient Rome. “Eat, drink, and be merry” they say, and everyone seems in festive mood. [Read more…]

45. Forgiveness & Punishment

23rd November 1999 by Arthur Eedle

Be not deceived. God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap. (Gal.6:7)

He who does wrong shall receive for the wrong which he has done, and there is no respect of persons. (Col.3:25)

Whatever good thing that any man does, the same shall he receive of the Lord. (Eph.6:8)

21. The first and the lost

28th August 1999 by Arthur Eedle

Did you read that correctly, or did you see what you thought it OUGHT to be? I purposely employed the word LOST instead of LAST for a good reason.  It highlights the fact that we all have pre-conceived ideas as to what TRUE Christianity is all about, especially when it comes to eschatology, the “last things.” And in point of fact, quite the majority of modern believers have accepted the traditional teaching that the Church is the “first” and the rest of the world is the “lost”.
