It was the end of Michaelmas Term at Caxton College, and Staff and Students had just attended the Carol Service in the Chapel. The time was just after 8 p.m., and almost everyone in the College was at that moment in the Refectory, enjoying free mince pies and cocoa. The next morning would see the exodus of students for the Christmas vacation. It was almost impossible to be heard, due to the excitement generated in dining area, where students and staff jostled each other, shared jokes, and generally enjoyed an atmosphere of hilarity. The new term started at Caxton on a sombre note, as they remembered a first-year student who had gone missing in Thailand after the Tsunami. There was a two-minute silence in Chapel as Mark Waters came to their minds, a surprisingly able student who showed signs of great academic progress in Theology, but was no longer to be with them. It was the middle of the afternoon, and Doctor Quinton had just finished his cup of tea, when there was quite a commotion outside the Annexe, in the main body of the College Library. Normally students are required to keep their talking down to whisper-level, so as not to disturb others at work, but this was an intrusion of a rare kind, and Doc decided to investigate. Dr Quinton’s days at Caxton College were never dull. Occasionally he joined one of the many tutorials, and in this way he became acquainted with the students, and quickly discerned which of them possessed academic ability, and which of them possessed the more beneficial spiritual dimension.
