I suppose the above title might lead the reader to think that I am about to expound the miracle of metamorphosis – how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly – and its spiritual significance to a believer. Has it ever crossed your mind what happens when you think? Probably not. Leastways, I am referring to the EFFECT of thinking, rather than the CONTENT of one’s thoughts. We all know the CONTENTS of our thinking, that’s fairly obvious, but the EFFECT of our thinking is far from obvious. The Bible records two occasions when the Sun’s light failed inexplicably, over quite large regions of the earth’s surface. The first was immediatelybefore the Exodus from Egypt, when the light failed for nearly three days. The second was during the crucifixion of our Lord, when the darkness lasted for three hours. At the time of the Exodus we also learn that the children of Israel had light, so that the line of demarcation between the two areas passed between the Israelites in Goshen, and the urban area where Pharaoh lived. At the time of the crucifixion the region of darkness extended from the land of Israel as far north as the Black Sea. Various historical records which have come down to us, enable us to have this additional information. When I was a young man at University, I studied some of the intricate laws of nature in the realms of physics and astronomy. Some of the laws were simple to understand. Others were far from simple. But all the time I found myself grappling with LAWS. And without those laws, there would never have been a degree course in Physics. Sadly I realised that most students were studying those laws out of a basic interest, yes, but more so with a view to later employment prospects, rather than to appreciate the evidence of the LAWGIVER. How many senses do we possess? To most people the answer would straightway be “Five”. This is the standard textbook analysis of the human senses, although occasionally we hear someone referring to their ‘sixth sense’, and we know by the context that they feel they are using a sense of a type altogether different to the normal five. Even in the earliest known literature we find writers posing questions and suggesting answers, but not until 1953 did man really begin to discover a few simple basic facts about sleep and the world of dreams.
