Has it ever crossed your mind what happens when you think? Probably not. Leastways, I am referring to the EFFECT of thinking, rather than the CONTENT of one’s thoughts. We all know the CONTENTS of our thinking, that’s fairly obvious, but the EFFECT of our thinking is far from obvious. Sometimes we hear the expression, “That’s a brainwave!” And because it’s a common or garden expression, we don’t any longer ask what we mean by it. Are there such things as BRAIN WAVES? Arid if so, how can they be measured? [Read more…]
51. The Dark Day of May 1780
The Bible records two occasions when the Sun’s light failed inexplicably, over quite large regions of the earth’s surface. The first was immediatelybefore the Exodus from Egypt, when the light failed for nearly three days. The second was during the crucifixion of our Lord, when the darkness lasted for three hours. At the time of the Exodus we also learn that the children of Israel had light, so that the line of demarcation between the two areas passed between the Israelites in Goshen, and the urban area where Pharaoh lived. At the time of the crucifixion the region of darkness extended from the land of Israel as far north as the Black Sea. Various historical records which have come down to us, enable us to have this additional information. For example, Phlegon of Tralles in his major historical work entitled “Olympiades“, had this to say. [Read more…]
50. The Golden Section
When I was a young man at University, I studied some of the intricate laws of nature in the realms of physics and astronomy. Some of the laws were simple to understand. Others were far from simple. But all the time I found myself grappling with LAWS. And without those laws, there would never have been a degree course in Physics. Sadly I realised that most students were studying those laws out of a basic interest, yes, but more so with a view to later employment prospects, rather than to appreciate the evidence of the LAWGIVER. 49. Vengeance
We should like to thank all those who respond to our Telegraphs, either by thanking us for fellowship, or with problems and disagreements needing to be tackled. Our readers will have noticed that our theme of late has been very much devoted to the issues connected with Ultimate Reconciliation, and this is because we have sensed the Lord’s gracious pressure upon us in that direction. Some have written to say that the expositions have released them from perplexities concerning God’s character (in connection with the popular notion of hell-fire), but others have given us lists of references which support a most gruesome scene in the distant future, seemingly contradicting our thesis. [Read more…]
48. Freewill
The word FREEWILL immediately conjures up thoughts of the argument that has existed for nearly four centuries over PREDESTINATION and FREEWILL, as expounded originally by CALVIN and ARMINIUS. Before investigating the subject of freewill further, it might be profitable to state what the Encyclopaedia says about these two men. [Read more…]
47. “Too Hard”
“My heart is bubbling over with a goodly theme – – My tongue is like the pen of a ready writer – -.” (Psalm 45:1)
Yes, we truly have a goodly theme, and desire to share what we have learned, for by sharing we believe that we shall give glory to the Lord, who so greatly deserves our praise! Our title “Too Hard” may seem a little enigmatic, but let us unveil the reason straight away by considering the conversation the Angel of the Lord had with Abraham, about the prospect of his having a son through Sarah. [Read more…]
46. Confession and Torment!
We have to admit that sometimes the titles of our PTs may appear to be a little bizarre. But there is a very good reason for us to write on the themes of “confession” and “torment”, and the outcome, we promise you, will be far from bizarre. We are now just a matter of hours away from Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, when the High Priest went, once each year, into the Holy of Holies to present an offering for the sins of ALL ISRAEL. And as we come to the N.T. and realise that our Great High Priest offered Himself without spot to God, and entered into the Holiest in heaven, it was on behalf of ALL PEOPLE, not just Israel. [Read more…]
45. The “Full” Gospel
Our title may lead one to think that we are about to embark on the theme of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, to use its full name. But this is not the case. However, we shall need to refer to the FGBMFI along the way. What is the FULL GOSPEL? And why has this expression arisen in the last 30 years or so? And does it suggest that beforehand people were NOT preaching a FULL gospel? [Read more…]
44. National Identity
As we approach the climax of the ages, and God begins to establish His Kingdom on earth in a visible manner, the subject of national identity and sovereignty will assume vital importance. The Scriptures declare unambiguously that God favours the establishment of nations, each with its own identity, customs, and manners, even though the “Kingdoms of this world have become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.” The United Kingdom of Christ is a spiritual foundation stone, but it will contain all the varieties of national characteristics. Even as each human being is unique in God’s creation, so also each nation in the Millennium will be unique. Furthermore, each nation will be self-governing, not ruled by other nations. Each nation will need to look to the Spiritual Head over all nations, even the Lord Christ Himself. [Read more…]
