When I was a young lad of about 12 I can clearly remember my Headmaster, who was also our Greek teacher, telling us a strange tale from ancient times, told by Plato in his Republic, at the start of Book VII. It concerned the fate of some characters who were chained up behind a pillar in a cave, so that they were unable to turn their heads to see anything but that which was before them. The cave entrance was behind them, and some yards in front of them was a wall on which were thrown all the shadows of those who passed that way, produced by a fire blazing at a distance above and behind them. 42. I Believe!
“I believe in God”. So begins the creed which is said every Sunday in every Anglican church throughout the land. Many other items of belief are then added to this public declaration, known as THE CREED. It is considered to be of the utmost importance in the Christian faith to have a creed. Different denominations have different creeds. They do not vary all that much of course, otherwise they could not all call themselves exponents of the Christian faith. But the differences have often been the grounds of some break away in the past, resulting in yet another denomination. [Read more…]
41. The Image
In the last article we spoke about the image of God’s Son being engraved into our nature by the Work of God.
In this article we shall look at a completely different type of image – one that does credit to no one, and ends in death. But although the subject may seem to be so negative, it nevertheless contains a most important lesson, and may save someone from disaster, who reads it. [Read more…]

40. The Mirror
Yesterday (24th July 1991) the Lord spoke to me. His word was very brief and came at a time when I was not expecting anything. He said, “I hate admiration. I have no need of it.” I pondered this word in my mind and heart throughout the day as it became clearer what He meant. This morning He gave me more, which I have written down, and would like to share it. It is as follows:- [Read more…]

38. Babylon & Jerusalem
Babylon and Jerusalem have both been literal cities in the Middle East. Babylon is first mentioned in Genesis, at the building of the Tower of Babel. Jerusalem is first mentioned in Genesis as the home of the King of Salem, Melchizedek. It might be argued that these first occurrences pave the way for the rest of the Bible, and the understanding that gradually builds up of a SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE. In our last paper we said that the Bible was, in essence, the “Tale of Two Cities”. And this is indeed true, because of the spiritual principles involved. One may become a great scholar, and be much increased in learning, and know the answers to many questions, but if basic spiritual principles are not understood and applied in life, then all this knowledge is in vain. It dies with us when we die, and is not part of an incorruptible inheritance, laid up in heaven. This is very sad. [Read more…]
37. Flesh & Spirit
In this paper we shall investigate what the Bible says about FLESH and SPIRIT, the great contrast of Scripture, the Old Man and the New Man, Babylon and Jerusalem, the Great City and the Holy City. It could well be said that the Bible is the “Tale of two cities”. Once this important truth is understood, then the art of hermeneutics, or interpretation, becomes ten times clearer. [Read more…]
36. On Your Toes!
Many attempts have been made to interpret the books of Daniel and Revelation. No two commentaries seem to agree. Theories abound. It’s obvious they cannot all be correct! And if we enter the arena, can we hope to do any better? We are not claiming to have any or all the answers, but wish to share an understanding which we feel is important, especially at this time, when the Middle East powder keg seems ready to blow up in the faces of all mankind. [Read more…]
34. Money Lovers
PHILARGURISTS
“The love of money is the root of all evil.”
This is a well-known saying. it is found in Paul’s first letter to Timothy, (6:10) and in this paper we shall be looking at the implications of this statement. [Read more…]
