These days one hears a lot about UNITY. It’s a word that attracts attention simply because to the untuned ear the possession of it would constitute the elimination of war, violence, dangers,antagonisms, things that are suffused throughout the present world (and indeed always have been). So, they say, let’s work towards UNITY. Yes, let that be our goal! Let’s encourage each other to be at one, no matter what our beliefs are. Let’s forget our differences and be friends. There must be a lot of good in movements such as ECUMENISM, where previously antagonistic denominations decide to lay aside their divisions, and worship together. And just remember how the Pope gathered 120 different religious leaders together to Assisi to pray together for peace. What a good idea. Surely all these endeavours must be looked upon with favour. (This is called SYNCRETISM.) All those responsible for such moves are lauded for their courage and faith in pursuing UNITY. Should it not be so? [Read more…]

No, this article has nothing to do with Oscar Wilde’s famous play, but we have employed a similar title!
The word Earnest is used three times in the New Testament. Here are the references –
2 Cor.1:22 God . . . has sealed us, and given us the earnest of the spirit in our hearts.
2 Cor.5:5 God, who has also given us the earnest of the spirit.
Eph.1:14 You were sealed with that promised holy spirit, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
The Greek word for earnest is ARRABON. Now here is a strange thing. The equivalent Hebrew word sounds almost identical, being pronounced AYRABON. Furthermore in Latin it is ARRHABO. There are not many such words that appear so nearly alike in three different languages. [Read more…]

Frequently these days I receive papers, or read articles, which fight shy of accepting the thousand-year reign of Christ, as stated in Revelation 20. It is as though a new consensus of opinion is gaining ground amongst evangelicals and charismatics, whereby it is now in vogue to spiritualise the words of Rev.20, so that the “thousand years” can mean any length of time, as long as it’s not 1,000 years. Arthur writes – A few years ago I found a sore growing on my right ear that would not heal. No matter what I tried, nothing worked. Eventually I visited my local doctor, who arranged for an appointment at the Lincoln Hospital. In the out-patients’ department they took a biopsy, and when I next visited, they told me I had a squamous cell carcinoma, a form of cancer, and that it would have to be cut out. This meant slicing away a part of my ear , but as it was put to me, “you’ll still have enough ear to hang your glasses on!” [Read more…]

I know all about the despair of overcoming chronic temptations. It is not serious, provided self-offended petulance, annoyance at breaking records, impatience etc. don’t get the upper hand. No amount of falls will really undo us if we keep on picking ourselves up each time. We shall of course be very muddy and tattered children by the time we reach home. But the bathrooms are all ready, the towels put out, and the clean clothes in the airing cupboard. The only fatal thing is to lose one’s temper and give it up. It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us: it is the very sign of His presence. [Read more…]

There are two golden days in the week, upon which, and about which, I never worry – two carefree days, kept sacredly free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is Yesterday; yesterday, with its cares and frets, all its pains and aches, all its faults, mistakes and blunders, have passed forever beyond my recall. I cannot undo an act that I wrought; nor unsay a word that I said.All that it holds of my life, of wrong, regret and sorrow, is in the hands of the Mighty Love that can bring honey out of the rock and sweetest waters out of the bitterest desert. I would now like to take this a stage further and refer to another modern complaint, known as Repetitive Strain Injury, or RSI for short. How good it is to learn from one another! How much we have profited over the years by the writings of others. Dorothy L. Sayers spent much time lecturing and writing on the subject of the Trinity, and in her expositions she emphasised that God had given to us a threefold ability in life, as a reflection of what He is Himself by nature. In this sense, she said that man was intended to create, and that he would never be truly satisfied in life unless he could create something. [Read more…]
