The following article was written in the 1890s by Bishop John Charles Ryle, (1816 – 1900) the first Bishop of Liverpool, for the Daily Telegraph’s Saturday Religious Comment column. It was entitled Evangelism and the Second Advent. It is one of over 800 of his tracts now available on Public Domain. [Read more…]
71. C.S. Lewis on the Second Advent
“Many people find it difficult to believe in this great event without trying to guess its date, or even without accepting as a certainty the date that any quack or hysteric offers them. To write a history of all these exploded predictions would need a book, and a sad, sordid, tragi-comical book it would be. [Read more…]
72. Elijah and the Second Advent
The Prophet Malachi (4:5) foretold the coming of Elijah, prior to the “great and awesome day of the Lord.” The High Priest and many other faithful Jews would leave a place at their table, in case he suddenly appeared. Some Jews persist in this practice today. [Read more…]
73. Dressing and Keeping
“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”
An important lesson is contained in the two Hebrew words translated “dress” and “keep”. [Read more…]
74. The Rib
“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept:
and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.”
75. Enmity
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed;
he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
God has decreed enmity between the woman and the Devil. Why? Because the woman is the figure of the Bride of Christ, the one who will reign with Him in the days of God’s Kingdom. Hence there must, perforce, be a continual battle between those who have welcomed the Lord into their lives, and those who have entertained the spirit of the antichrist in theirs. [Read more…]
76. Three Ribs
We have seen that the Rib, taken from Adam, becomes the “flesh and bones” of the woman, and by figure, the Bride. Paul taught this in Ephesians. To be “in Christ”, to be “members of His body” becomes synonymous with the Rib bone taken from the Second Adam’s side. It is quite amazing just how much prophetic truth is locked up within the first three chapters of Genesis. [Read more…]
77. As in Noah’s Day
Our Lord’s words relating to His coming made mention of “eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, buying, selling, planting and reaping”. These are all acceptable and normal daily and annual activities known to mankind. The message was really saying that no one was taking any notice of Noah’s preaching, neither did they see the purpose of the Ark he was building. Therefore they either took no notice, or worse still, mocked and scorned Noah. [Read more…]
78. The Chess Board
Here is a brief historical survey showing that the world’s “Chess Board” as it was in N.T. times has been restored during the last century. This may not be coincidental. The Lord may have some special purpose in fostering this restoration. Let’s have a look at a few items. [Read more…]
79. The Name
The name of the Lord, translated JEHOVAH in Bibles is so sacred that Jews will not pronounce it. In fact they say that the true pronunciation of the Hebrew word is kept a secret by the Rabbis. However, there is no reason why we, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, should not study that Name, and see whether there is some special truth locked up within its letters. [Read more…]
