“For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.”  (Exodus 20:5)

Some have been troubled by an apparent injustice in the Lord’s words. They begin by quoting the Lord in Ezekiel 18:20 – “The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son,”  and say that God has contradicted Himself. On the surface it may appear to be like that.  Therefore it would be good to investigate that suspicion by a brief enquiry. [Read more…]

Not a pleasant subject!  None of us like facing it, and for the most part we give it no thought whilst health is maintained. However, “It is appointed unto men once to die.” (Heb.9:27)

I have had to face the reality of death recently as I watched my wife slowly fade away as she struggled with cancer of the liver. She died back in January this year. We have a robust and lively family, but we have all been deeply upset by the death of the family matriarch. [Read more…]

There was a rainbow this morning as I was eating my breakfast, and I was reminded of God’s promise not to destroy the earth again. The shape of a bow with an imagined arrow pointing AWAY from the earth! How fitting. Then came to mind the words of an old song, “God said a fire not a flood next time”, and I saw how misguided those words were, based upon a faulty literalistic interpretation of some verses in 2 Peter and Revelation, where God’s judgments by fire will clean the world of evil rather than burning up His creation. In Revelation 4:5 we read about “seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”  How strange. Isn’t there just ONE Holy Spirit? A search for understanding will therefore be in order. [Read more…]

Annie Johnson Flint was born on Christmas Eve, in the year 1866, in the little town of Vineland, New Jersey. Her father was of English descent, and the mother was Scottish. Her first twenty years were of normal development, and as a Christian she trained to become a teacher. But after only two years of teaching she began to suffer from arthritis, which developed into a chronic condition from which she never recovered. The rest of her life was spent in a wheelchair. Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church. (3 John 1:9-10)

Part 18 certainly opened up channels of thought, as I expected it would, and I’m glad because it makes the way clear to give sensible and truly Biblical answers to the various problems cited.

The biggest problem was this – and on the face of it, certainly demands an answer. I have received such words as “It’s not fair!” and “There’s no point in making a choice to believe if everyone’s going to heaven.” Such comments only tend to emphasise the lack of deeper teaching throughout the evangelical churches. Those who prefer to believe the world was created in seven literal days are often referred to as “Young Earthers”. It is not always a derogatory expression, but tends to class all such as somewhat simplistic, and not in tune with the scientific progress of the last 200 years.
