Did you read that correctly, or did you see what you thought it OUGHT to be? I purposely employed the word LOST instead of LAST for a good reason. It highlights the fact that we all have pre-conceived ideas as to what TRUE Christianity is all about, especially when it comes to eschatology, the “last things.” And in point of fact, quite the majority of modern believers have accepted the traditional teaching that the Church is the “first” and the rest of the world is the “lost”. 22. The coming of the Lord
Surely it is a good thing to be amongst those who “love His appearing.” (2 Tim.4:8) How many dear souls have yearned for Him in later life, saying, “How long, O Lord, is Thy chariot in coming?” But now, at the end of the year, the decade, the century, and the millennium, we seem to be living in an atmosphere electrically charged, and bristling with anticipation. What shall we say to this? The following points may be of comfort, and yet also of instruction at this season. [Read more…]
23. “I am coming tomorrow!”
The words kept ringing in her ears. She had been watching the Gentle Healer for some days as He performed miracles in and around Capernaum. She had seen how caring He was of the sick and suffering, and she was strangely drawn to Him. And yet she always kept her distance, just far enough not to attract His attention, but near enough to hear His words. [Read more…]
24. Living stones for a spiritual temple
“You also, as living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood.” (1 Peter 2:5)
Have you ever had the sheer joy of reading H.V.Morton’s book, “In the Steps of the Master”? Published in 1934, as a result of his wide travels in the Middle East, he had a manner of writing that leaves the reader with vivid mental images. The following passage (from pages 62 – 65) is most helpful when connected with the words of Peter, quoted above. [Read more…]
25. Rosh Hashana – the feast of trumpets
At 6 p.m. this evening, wherever you are in the world, it is the beginning of the first day of the Hebrew year, the 1st of Tishri, known as Rosh Hashana, “Head of the Year”, and in Leviticus 23 it is designated “the memorial of blowing of trumpets.” Of course, this happens, and has happened, every year, and it may seem superfluous to mention it, any more than it is necessary to remind everyone on January 1st that it is the start of the Gentile year. [Read more…]
26. A Tribute to the Rock-Badger’s Family
No one knows why Azaliah named his son Shaphan, the Rock-Badger. In Proverbs 30:26 we learn that the “Conies, or Rock-Badgers, are a feeble folk, but they make their house in the rock.” Sensible little creatures. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians that God has “chosen the weak things of the world to confound the mighty.” And where do these weak ones dwell? In Christ, the Rock! “Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee,” wrote Augustus Toplady in his famous hymn. [Read more…]
27. The Cursed Fig Tree
It was April 1st A.D. 33, (just two days before the Crucifixion,) and what happened that day was no April fool. Jesus had spent the night with His friends at Bethany, and was now walking towards Jerusalem with His disciples. The long trudge caused hunger. In the distance a fig tree was sighted, with the hope of obtaining sustenance. However, on reaching the tree it was found to be barren. This brought forth the perplexing curse. “Let no one eat fruit from you hereafter for ever, (i.e. indefinitely)” But as Mark so poignantly said, “It was not the season for figs.” [Read more…]
28. “Tell me the old, old story”
Of recent months we have received a number of articles presenting what can only be called “The New American Standard Version of the Gospel.” After piecing it together into a consecutive narrative, it runs like this. [Read more…]
29. A Sovereign Work
We have a long-standing friend who has spent most of his life in a missionary capacity, and of recent years his work has been towards the Arabic nations of the Middle East. He has taken Arabic Bibles into their lands, and found that God has gone before him in a sovereign manner. Many of the strange tales he has told us have also been experienced by other workers in the Middle East. Although we are not at liberty to reveal our friend’s name, or recount many of his adventures, purely for security reasons, we can share one or two facets of information which will thrill the hearts of those who are “watching and waiting” in these last days before the Lord’s return. [Read more…]
30. Today is the Secret of Tomorrow
In the Lord’s prayer we read, “Give us this day our daily bread.” But my lexicon reminds me that the word “daily” is a very strange word, not found elsewhere, and its literal meaning is “that which is coming upon”, in other words, tomorrow! “Give us tomorrow’s bread TODAY, .” Here is the secret. Tomorrow is the Kingdom of God. But today we may receive spiritual bread to be ready for the Kingdom. Therein is great comfort, because it is God’s promise, and the Lord Jesus specifically told us to ask for it. [Read more…]
