March 1976

THE SECOND EVE

With whom shall I dwell, says the Lord?
With whom shall I share all my glory?
Where is the Maiden of My Delight
For whom I have written this story?
To whom shall I go, says the King?
To whom shall I look with elation?
Whom shall I choose to be my Queen
And the Mother of God’s New Creation?

 She dwells on the earth, says the Lord,
She dwells in the Vale of Decision;
Despised and rejected and misunderstood,
But clothed with a heart of compassion.
She abandoned her home, says the King,
To worship Me out in the desert;
Poor in the spirit, with tears in her eyes,
My wings were her only true covert.

 She took precious seed from my hand
And cast it down into the darkness;
Her sister berated her wasteful ways,
And the rest of mankind thought it madness.
But these were the ways of her Lord,
And this was the mind of her Master;
She held to the promise of Life to Come,
And equated it not with disaster.

 The seed in due course came alive,
And the Word of the Lord was enacted;
The Woman of Sorrows, acquainted with grief
Looked up, as her faith was perfected.
So Rebecca shall come to her Lord,
Tears of grief become tears of rejoicing,
And running to Isaac’s outstretched arms,
Darkened years shall be lost in embracing.

THE COMING OF THE CHRIST

The Church it prayed and prayed again, (As only churches can),
Until the sweat ran down the brow of the “premillennarian“;
And God who hears and listens well (as only God can hear),
Whispered a comforting word of hope, which fell upon the ear.

 Dazed and bewildered, thunderstruck,
that God should speak at all,
The Church took time to regain its poise before it could recall –
“Prepare yourselves for the midnight hour
and the coming of the Christ,
And if anyone utters a contrary word, let no one be enticed.

Watch and wait and listen well, for the time is now at hand;
My chosen one who gives you joy
will sweep down through your land;
All eyes shall see and be surprised at what I have in store,
So make provision for that day. Be ready well before.”

 The Church it fussed and flapped about,
(as churches have a wont)
Until its state of readiness had “reached the full amount”;
Then God who waits with patience long (as only God can wait)
Assessed the progress of His word, that the time was almost right.

 So then the Royal Command want forth
from the place we cannot see,
And the Servant of God took special heed
to the Masters s final plea –
“Prepare the nations of humankind for events that lie ahead
Till no one utters a contrary word of ‘this’ or ‘that’ instead.

You’ve waited and watched and listened well
till your patience all but failed,
Now I send you forth, my Chosen One, The Christ to be unveiled;
Enter the world of darkest gloom, fly down on a beam of light,
Illuminate the hearts of men till grey becomes black and white.”

 The Church of course was up and about
(when churches usually doze)
And so it was able to see the sight, as the glory of God arose;
And the God who moves in the world of men
(as only God can move)
Sent His Anointed Holy One for the sons of men to approve.

But after the glittering flashing light that made the nations shake,
The reality of what had come that day
was called “The Big Mistake.”
“Prepare yourselves!” the Church enjoined,
 “to resist the Antichrist!
And if anyone utters a contrary word, let no one be enticed!

 For what did we watch and wait and strive
through many patient days?
No matter how wonderful all this seems,
they cannot enlist OUR praise.
Don’t try to teach us anything! We know it from Aye to Zee:
The Chapter and Verse within the Book is plain for all to see!”

 The world became indignant then, (oft the world has been)
And gave the Church a mighty WHACK!
for thinking itself so ‘clean’,
But the Church imagined the pain was good
(as churches have done before)
Allowed by the Lord, to get a reward,
instead of His chastisement sore.

 And so the Church’s demand went forth
from the place that all men know,
And the Angel of God screwed up his face
s he watched the scene below;
“We won’t assist you,” replied the world, “We have no silver cup;
We do not intend to wash our hands;
once in the world was enough!”

 So the Church decided to do it alone
(as the Jews had tried before)
And the Church became an Antichrist, red in the tooth and claw;
But when God raised His Servant up, (’twas the Body of His Son)
The world enjoyed Millennial Rest,
and the work of God was done.
